A new film, The Last Picture Shows, with its lyrical and elegiac tone is truly resonant. A lovely documentary about surviving small-town independent movie theatres and how they have managed to keep going, Filmmaker Rustin Thompson searches for traces of what was once a centre of small-town life. On the trip, he finds long abandoned and forgotten cinemas; movie houses that have fallen into disrepair; theatres recently closed, theatres struggling to hold on, and theatres that—thanks to their thoughtful caretakers—are not only surviving but thriving. It is at once a cautionary tale and a love letter to an era before it becomes bygone. The Last Picture Shows, is a loving tribute to a piece of our collective history that is vital to hold onto. As long as cinephiles and lovers of culture and social gatherings exist, the cinema as an experience outside the house will never die.
