The Hudson Film Society began in 2006 with a
meeting of a founding committee, Inga and John Lawson, Elaine Steinberg, Helen
Henshaw and Clint Ward. Later, Michael Poirier joined. Several meetings were held
to discuss various programming ideas until the Committee was informed of the existence
of The Film Circuit Group, an outreach division of the Toronto International Film
Festival. An affiliation was begun with the Film Circuit Group providing leadership
and advice concerning film rights, programming and guests. The initial season
opened with Water followed by A Simple Curve, Joyeux
Noel, C.R.A.Z.Y, Bonbom El Perro, Manufactured Landscapes, Tsotsi and
closing with Volver.
Screenings were held at the Hudson Village Theatre
on one Monday per month using an HD video projector and DVDs. The series was so
popular that evening performances soon sold out and a matinee had to be added.
It was an extremely successful beginning. In 2008 a 5 evening Film Festival was
added and in 2010 a Documentary Festival – DocFest – was also added.
The 6th Season will open on September 19.
Committee members are looking forward to another sold out “Monday
at the Movies”.
